Since probably early 2016 Ebay seller littleplaces from Tyron, North Carolina, USA has been selling these replica North Carolina plates. He is selling them as replicas (which is good) and there have probably been quite a few more that he has already sold. They are from 1914 to 1953 and he says they were made about 30 years ago.
Many of these plates are not quite right and although he says they are exact remakes, if you check http://www.porcelainplates.net/the_archive.html for the porcelain (enamelled) ones, you will see they are not quite right. Many of the embossed ones look not quite right also with the slots wrong and the positioning/size of the dies not quite right.
The problem is going to come later when some of these plates get into the market or crooks try to distress them and claim they are genuine. From a photo during a sale or trade it will be very difficult to tell if the plate or plates are genuine or not.
This just makes everything difficult for everyone. Reproductions are very bad for the hobby and if you care about the future of the hobby, it is better you do not buy reproductions.
